Javid threatens to take-over planning from councils not delivering enough housing

Councils across England will be stripped of their power to decide on local planning matters if they do not approve the number of housing applications the Goverment wants.

Sajid Javid, secretary of state for housing, told the Sunday Times (pay wall):

We have a housing crisis in this country. We need a housing revolution. The new rules will no longer allow ‘nimby’ councils that don’t really want to build the homes that their local community needs to fudge the numbers.

We are going to be breathing down your neck day and night to make sure you are actually delivering on those numbers.

And if they fail he would over-ride local decision making by elected councillors and send in inspectors to do the job.

He was speaking in advance of a new National Planning Policy Framework to be announced tomorrow.
